Boris Johnson has admitted to regrets over his early experiments with bike lanes on a busy London streets.

The schemes drew fierce criticism from cycle safety campaigners following a series of deaths and injuries, often involving heavy lorries.

The lanes, known as cycle superhighways, amounted to narrow strips of blue-painted tarmac at the side of the road.

Accidents on one bike lane, Cycle Superhighway Two (CS2), east London, claimed the lives of six riders between 2011 and 2014.

New bike lanes now include a low kerb stone barrier to seperate cyclists from motor traffic. Some existing lanes have also been upgraded.

London's mayor told ITV's The Late Debate the scheme evolved because 'you learn things as you go along.'

He confessed he rides his bike around the Olympic Park to try to recapture the 'magic' of London 2012.

Johnson also joked about his next big job.
