London's food hygiene shame: The filthy restaurants in your area
An ITV News investigation has revealed that hundreds of places to eat in London have been given a zero star rating by local authorities for food hygiene.
Across the city 358 establishments scored zero - which means urgent improvement is needed. The owners have 14 days to appeal the rating - if they decide not to many are allowed to stay open under the proviso that they will improve safety.
When a restaurant is deemed to be an immediate risk to the public it is closed down.
Restaurants in Camden, Ealing and Tower Hamlets fared worst in the most recent inspections.
22 restaurants in Camden, 19 in Ealing and 17 in Tower Hamlets were given zero stars and told they needed to urgently improve in order to avoid being shut down.
For takeaways, Croydon is the worst rated London borough - with 15 being given zero stars, followed by Newham where 12 takeaways scored zero and Brent where 11 takeaways were given the lowest possible rating.
It appears Havering is the cleanest place to eat in London - none of the pubs, takeaways or restaurants inspected scored zero.
The ratings are publicly available - and you can check the rating of your favourite restaurant on the Food Standards website here.
Inspectors decide the ratings by evaluating the following:
how hygienically the food is handled - how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
the condition of the structure of the buildings - the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe
