Unsuspecting couple conned out of savings by bogus landlord for a flat that wasn't even his
Olina Zajickova and her boyfriend Duncan Weir lost all their savings and were left temporarily homeless when a bogus landlord conned out of their deposit for a flat which wasn't even his to rent.
The couple thought they'd found the perfect flat in Islington on the Zoopla website. They made an appointment to view the property on Popham Street and put in an offer immediately.
After they signed a tenancy agreement the so-called landlord handed over keys and a fob for the electronic gates.
The unsuspecting couple who had already hired a removal van, turned up two days later to be met by the real landlord.
He told them so many hopeful tenants had arrived at the property he'd been forced to change the locks.
Another couple who'd arrived from abroad with all their belongings burst into tears when they realised they'd also been victims of the scam.> The alleged fraudster who called himself 'Mustafa Bhatt' was caught on CCTV when he brazenly walked another victim to the bank so she could withdraw a £4000 advance.> Detective are now appealing for help to track him down. They have traced 12 victims so far but believe there could be many more. In total he has got away with more than £20,000.
