UKIP politician Winston McKenzie has defended himself after being sacked as the party's Commonwealth spokesman.

His dismissal follows a series of gaffes, including calling Croydon a 'dump' during last year's local election campaign - in which he himself was a candidate for Croydon North.

The former boxer also said he was 'dismayed' by the former boxing promoter Kellie Maloney's transition to a woman, and while standing in 2012 said gay adoption was 'tantamount to child abuse'.

Tonight, he repeated the disparaging remarks about Croydon insisting "it is a dump, I want to know what they're doing with our money." Mr McKenzie is planning to stand again in May. When pressed about whether he was insulting his own voters, he went on "damn right, we've got to make a change."
