A Dagenham chip shop has been crowned the best in the UK, coming top of 900 restaurants across the country.

And it's not the first accolade for the Golden Fish, which was also voted 'Best Fish and Chip Shop' in the South East.

The restaurant, which has been a family business for 40 years, attracts around 5,000 diners every week.

So what's the secret behind making the best chips? Jason Aiken who runs The Golden Fish puts it's success down to fresh fare:

Sixty eight thousand people voted for their best local chippy in this year's Choice Chips Award, run by the Potato Council.

The Golden Fish is celebrating by offering customers a free bag of chips on Monday 23rd February. On it's Facebook page, the chippy also pledged to donate all profits that day to two local Dagenham charities, The Osborne Partnership and Step up.
