A circle of pens laid in tribute to victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre has emerged in Trafalgar Square.

Thousands first gathered on Wednesday evening in spontaneous protest against the killing of 12 people murdered at the offices of a Parisian satirical magazine.

People held their pens aloft during an evening rally after the news of the brutal murders of the French journalists and police officers by Islamist extremist attackers emerged. Jamie Shepherd reports.

On Thursday, hundreds of pens remained discarded across Trafalgar Square. Rebecca Denholm found them lying in a pile and decided to make a circle around one of the floral tributes and posters.

In an interview with ITV News London, she said she wanted to create a symbol of unity where people could congregate to contemplate the murders.
