London mayor Boris Johnson today unveiled a new-look driverless tube train.
The first of 250 new trains are due to enter service on the Piccadilly Line in 2022.
Underground bosses say they expect the trains to be fully automated, with no driver, a few years later.
The RMT union said it was "deeply concerned".
The mayor denied the move to phase out drivers would lead to job losses.
He insisted a member of London Underground staff would travel on every train.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash vowed to fight any decision to remove drivers from train cabs - possibly with strikes.
