Scared of spiders? Conkers and vinegar could keep the eight-legged creatures away

Homes around London are being invaded by spiders with rising temperatures helping the creepy crawlies grow bigger than usual.

If you'd prefer to keep them out, here are some tips on how to keep your home spider-free.

  • SWITCH OFF OUTDOOR LIGHTS

Spiders aren't attracted by the light. But bugs and pests they feast on often are. So if you keep the lights off there's more chance spiders will stay away.

  • PATCH UP CRACKS

Probably the most obvious way to keep spiders at bay. Stop them getting in through any small cracks or holes by sealing them up. You can also buy a special mesh to cover the chimney.

  • GET THE HOOVER OUT

Vacuum away spider webs and egg sacs. It's one of the simplest way to deter spiders. When their web keeps disappearing, they'll eventually give up and move on.

  • HORSE CHESTNUTS

Very non-scientific, but placing horse chestnuts in the corners of your home could chase spiders away. Conkers are thought to contain a noxious chemical that repels the creatures.

  • PEPPERMINT OIL

Spiders are also thought to hate the smell of peppermint oil. Spray it at all entrances to your home and they might just stay away.

  • VINEGAR

Vinegar contains an acid which when mixed with water and sprayed directly onto the spider will send it running.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE

Don't leave food around and do any washing up as soon as possible. Take away any piles of dirty clothes and clutter. Spiders like to hide in dark places.
