‘Some people stare in shock and cross the road’: Man who walks his ducks in Peckham explains all
A man who was spotted walking two ducks in south London has explained the circumstances behind the unusual sighting to ITV London.
Marwan Elboury was pictured walking his ducks, named Donald and Daffy, on Rye Street in Peckham on Easter Monday.
The ducks hatched in Mr Elboury’s home in July 2011 and the 20-year-old, who works at The Garden Centre Aquatics pet shop in Peckham, has looked after the pets ever since.
Asked what reactions he gets when he walks down the street with the ducks in tow, Mr Elboury told ITV London: “Well originally you had two types of people. There would be ones who would stare in shock and horror, and go as far as crossing the road or leaving the bus or tube.
“And the others who love them and want to stroke them, ask questions and take lots of pictures.
“But now I’ve taken them out so often, places like Peckham high street are familiar with them and that original shock of people seems to have died down.”
However, he said the animals still receive attention when they are on public transport.
“They still however get very big responses when they are on public transport especially when someone doesn't realise they are real on first glance – that’s a facial expression I will never tire of,” he added.
Mr Elboury revealed that he had not come across many other duck-owners in the capital and certainly not many that walk the animals on leads or on public transport.
Peckham residents can expect to see more of Donald and Daffy, with the 20-year-old set to continue walking the ducks around the area.
