Boris attacks government over lorry safety law refusal
London mayor Boris Johnson has launched a fresh attack on the government over its refusal to back new European laws on safer lorries.
The mayor is calling for EU legislation following a series of fatalities involving cyclists. He is proposing an EU directive requiring new lorries to have safer cabs with bigger windows and fewer blindspots.
The mayor's Cycling Commissioner Andrew Gilligan is in Brussels to lobby MEPs. The changes are backed by other European cities including Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Madrid. But City Hall claims the UK government has indicated it will oppose any mandatory requirements for new trucks.
