The photographs were all chosen from winners and finalists at this year's UK Picture Editors' Guild Awards.

**The Great Mosque of Aleppo, or the Umayyad Mosque, is the largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city of Aleppo, Syria. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, but has recently been badly damaged by fighting between the forces of the regime and those opposed to them. Here, inside the mosque on the opposition side, sniper screens are everywhere as the two sides are within very close proximity, less than 50 metres apart in some places
