A man has died following a fire in a disused Salvation Army hostel in east London.

About 40 firefighters were called to the building on Lower Clapton Road in Hackney in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Three people were injured in the blaze - one of them critically.

A police spokesman said: "The building has now been secured and a further fuller examination and removal of the body will begin shortly."

The Met and London Fire Brigade are investigating the cause of the fire, which they are treating as unexplained.

A man who jumped 25 feet from a window before firefighters arrived is in a critical condition in the Royal London Hospital with burns and injuries from his fall.

A man and a woman who were rescued from the roof of a porch by firefighters were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and have since been discharged.

Another man escaped uninjured. All of them are believed to be in their twenties.

A 37 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.
