Inquiry underway into prison van fire on motorway

An inquiry has begun after a prison van caught fire on a motorway in Cheshire.

Firefighters and the North West Motorway Police were called to the scene on the M62

Traffic was temporarily held between junction nine for Warrington and junction 10 for Winwick.

Two women prisoners and two escort officers working for custody company GEOAmey got out of the vehicle safely.

A spokesman for GEOAmey, which is contracted by the Ministry of Justice to provide prison escort and custody services, confirmed that the fire did involve one of their vans.

We can confirm an incident on the M62 near Manchester at lunchtime today in which a secure escort vehicle caught fire.

There were two escort officers and two female prisoners on board the vehicle who are all safe.

Police were quickly on scene and are assisting to escort the prisoners to their destination.

A full investigation will be carried out into the cause of the fire.
