Conservationists will plant the first saplings of a 50 million tree forest, running the length of the M62, later this morning.

The new 'Northern Forest' is designed to improve air quality and flood protection. It will stretch for 120 miles across the width of northern England.

Planting will take place on the Smithills Estate in Bolton later.
