Woman found unconscious in stretch of water dies in hospital

Police, paramedics and fire crews all helped to carry her prone body out of the water and up a steep embankment

A woman who was found unconscious in a stretch of water in Ashton-under-Lyne has died in hospital.

The unknown woman was found in water near to Wilshaw Lane by a member of the public at around 11am this morning.

After emergency services were called she was rushed to hospital in an ambulance with suspected hypothermia, but police said she died a short time later.

Police, paramedics and fire crews all helped to carry her out of the water and up a steep embankment behind the Waterloo and Taunton Conservative Club.

The police investigation is ongoing

“Shortly before 11am on Saturday 6 May 2017, police were called to Oldham Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, to reports of a distressed woman.

“Officers attended and discovered a woman in her 30s. She was taken to hospital for treatment where she sadly died.

“Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding her death are ongoing."
