Watch: Refugee Week Special Report

The North West provided support for more people fleeing war and persecution than any other region.

But - according to the Home Office - less than half of those people who arrive here are granted asylum when they first apply.

Many are from places like war torn Africa, Syria and Afghanistan.

While they wait for their applications to be decided, many are forced into destitution while their case is considered - surviving on just £5 per day.
