Two serious crashes on the M6 motorway mean a 12-mile-stretch of the southbound carriageway between Cumbria and Lancashire is likely to remain closed for most of the day.

Highways England is working with the emergency services at the scene of both collisions, which have led to the closure of the southbound carriageway between junction 36 at Kirkby Lonsdale and junction 34 at Lancaster.

One lane has now been reopened on the northbound carriageway but one lane remains closed while the police carry out an investigation. There are long tailbacks in both directions.

“These two incidents have led to large amounts of diesel being spilled onto the southbound carriageway so we need to clean this up and resurface the road before we can safely reopen the motorway.

“We’re got a diversion in place between junctions 36 and 34, but there are currently long delays so we’re advising drivers to avoid the area if at all possible.”
