An investigation is under way after a man died when he caught fire.

Witnesses have said the man may have set himself alight near to a canal in Blackburn yesterday.

Police and fire fighters were called to the towpath on Bolton Road, close to the Moorings Pub, at around 3.30pm.

The victim, who was believed to be in his late fifties was confirmed dead at the scene.

He has not been formally identified. A post mortem examination will take place today and Lancashire Police say his death is being treated as "unexplained".

"The investigation is very much in its early stages, a cordon remains in place at the scene and we will continue to work closely with the Fire Service to determine exactly how the fire started.

“The canal towpath is heavily used by cyclists, joggers and walkers and is close to The Raj Indian restaurant, we know that people were in the area at the time of this incident.

"I would urge anyone who may have seen what happened or has information about the incident to contact us."
