The Church of England's first woman bishop, Libby Lane, will be formally installed in her new role as Bishop of Stockport this afternoon. More than 1,500 people are expected to attend the event at Chester Cathedral on International Women's Day.

The service will start with a procession at 3.20pm. Bishop Libby will be installed by the Dean of Chester, Gordon McPhate.

“We are honoured to welcome the Bishop of Stockport and her supporters to this installation service at the cathedral. The service will mark a day of worship and celebration – for men and women alike – as a new chapter is created in the Church of England.”

– Dean of Chester, Gordon McPhate

Libby Lane was consecrated as the eighth Bishop of Stockport in a service at York Minster in January. It followed a decision by the Church last November to formally adopt legislation allowing women bishops.
