Terrified tram passengers have spoken of their fear after a shot was fired at the window of a tram smashing one of the windows.

A pensioner has told of the terrifying moment a tram was ‘shot at’ with a pellet gun, smashing a window.

Passengers are said to have descended into panic when the carriage window was struck as it pulled into Benchill Metrolink stop one evening last month.

David McKitty, 74, had got on the Manchester Airport line at Wythenshawe after visiting his daughter and was heading back to Manchester city centre.

As they got into Benchill, there was a loud bang as something hit the window and shattered it.

It’s not confirmed what it was that caused the damage, but David, who lives in Longsight, believes it was some form of bullet.

He said:

David said many passengers began to panic, with some wanting to get off the tram immediately through fear that there would be another ‘shot’.

TfGM’s Metrolink director, Peter Cushing, said the tram was withdrawn from service as a result and branded the act ‘mindless and reckless’.He said:

A GMP spokesman confirmed they were aware of the incident.
