Tram services have been disrupted after a car was driven onto tram tracks at a Metrolink station near the city centre following a police pursuit.

The car appears to have been driven onto the platform and then became wedged at the New Islington tram stop.

Police confirmed three people have been arrested.

The New Islington stop is just off Pollard Street in Ancoats.

This picture shows how the car appears to have been driven up the steps to the platform, ploughing through barriers and coming to rest with its nose down on the tracks.

Metrolink say:

The car, which was being pursued by police, was driven on to the tram stop platform, the partly crashed down onto the tracks, leaving it wedged at a 45-degree angle.Greater Manchester Police say that three people were arrested following the crash.Tram services are severely disrupted as a result.

Police said that two men in their 30s were arrested at the scene on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle. They have been taken to hospital to be checked as a precautionary measure.

A third man, aged 27, was arrested nearby a short time later on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle.

No members of the public were injured during the incident.
