A man has been been sentenced for threatening to kill his ex-partner and her children, as he held them in a siege at a house in Liverpool.

Elemir Lakatos has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a number of offences following the incident in Shellingford in Dovecot, on 22nd May.

Lakatos even told the children to "give your mum one last kiss" as he held his former partner and her children hostage.

Lakatos, who was shot by firearms officers during the incident, pleaded guilty to six offences, including threats to kill, false imprisonment and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence

Detective Superintendent Karen Cummings, said: "The sentencing today reflects the serious nature of the offences committed by Elemir Lakatos.

"His actions on that day have had a profound impact on his victims (his former partner and her two children, who were just seven and 11 years at the time) and they are still having nightmares as a result of the trauma he put them through.

"He threatened to kill his former partner, with a kitchen knife and an imitation firearm, in front of the children and even bid them give her a last kiss before sending them out of the house. The impact of that on those children is huge and they now have to live with the emotional scars of what happened that morning. No-one, let alone children, should have to endure such an ordeal.”

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved on the day including the neighbourhood officers who were first at the scene, the firearms officers who attended, the investigation team who have worked hard to put the evidence together and the Crown Prosecution Service for all their hard work in bringing the case to court.

"I would also like to reassure the public that firearms officers on Merseyside undergo extensive training and they have difficult decisions to make on a daily basis and the Judge has today commended the actions of the firearms officers involved.”
