Amir Khan looking for new trainer after split from Roach

Amir Khan has said he will immediately appoint a new trainer after confirming his split from Freddie Roach in the early hours of this morning.

There had been rumblings the Bolton boxer and Roach would go their separate ways after the former suffered a stunning fourth-round stoppage loss to Danny Garcia for the WBC and WBA light-welterweight titles in July.

And Khan wrote on his Twitter account today: "Officially iv left freddie roach. Just spoke to him and had a good professional chat and maybe in the future we work together.

"Freddie understood why I'm looking at other trainers and wished me all the best for the future. Who do. My followers think I should go with?"

Defeat against Garcia was Khan's second consecutive loss.

He was beaten via a split decision in December last year against Lamont Peterson, who later failed a drugs test which forced the postponement of a scheduled re-match.

Khan said in the aftermath of his defeat to Garcia that he was keen on remaining loyal to Roach, who took charge of the 25-year-old after his knockout loss to Breidis Prescott in September 2008 and led him to two world titles in the 140lb division.

However, Khan wanted guarantees Roach - who also looks after Manny Pacquiao - would be fully focused on the Brit for the duration of pre-fight camps.

And while the two seem to have been unable to come to a resolution, Khan's statement suggests his split from the owner of the famous Wild Card boxing gym has been an amicable one.

Hall of Fame trainer Roach is currently in Las Vegas with another one of his charges - Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who defends his WBC middleweight title against Sergio Martinez of Argentina on Saturday night.
