A fire broke out in a tortoise house in the early hours of this morning at a property in St Brelade.

Fire crews were on the scene just after 2:30 am.

The fire caused minor heat damage to the house and neighboring property, the tortoise house was also destroyed.

Initially it was believed a bonfire had got out of control.

Because of the information received, three fire engines were dispatched to the incident, two from St Helier HQ and one from the Western Fire Station.

By the time the Fire Service had arrived the fire was almost out, thanks to the actions of an ex-retained firefighter who got to work with the owner’s garden hose.

It is thought that an electrical fault within the Tortoise house was the cause of the blaze.
