The Seigneur of Sark, Michael Beaumont OBE, has died.

The 88-year-old passed away this morning from a suspected heart attack.

Mr Beaumont served the island for more than forty years.

He inherited the Fief in 1974 following the death of his grandmother Sibyl Hathaway, the Dame of Sark.

The role of Seigneur changed over the years, particularly when Sark became a democracy in 2008.

The Seigneur has no say in the running of the Government or any of its committees. The Seigneur's role is now one of Head of State to give advice when requested and to meet visiting dignitaries and to recommend the position of Seneschal and his Deputy to His Excellency the Lt. Governor after selection by an approved Appointments Board.
