Mediterranean turtle washed up in Jersey

A turtle washed up on the beaches of Jersey in January was cared for by local vets and volunteers. Terri is a Loggerhead turtle, the most common turtle in the Mediterranean that normally nest on beaches from Greece and Turkey to Israel and Libya.

After recovering from her injuries in Jersey, money was raised to fly her to a rescue centre in Gran Canaria.

Just 24-hours after a fundraising campaign to fly an endangered turtle back to warmer climes was set up, it has exceeded its £1,000 target.

New Era Vets in Jersey set up the page after a loggerhead turtle was washed up on a beach in Jersey earlier this month.

With the help of a number of local organisations, charities and businesses, they've been working to raise the animal's temperature, feed her and tend to her wounds and infections.

The plan is to fly Terri to a rescue centre in the Canary Islands where she can be released back into the wild.

New Era Veterinary Hospital says if they are not able to fly Terri home, the money will be donated to a turtle related charity.
