Mediterranean turtle washed up in Jersey

A turtle washed up on the beaches of Jersey in January was cared for by local vets and volunteers. Terri is a Loggerhead turtle, the most common turtle in the Mediterranean that normally nest on beaches from Greece and Turkey to Israel and Libya.

After recovering from her injuries in Jersey, money was raised to fly her to a rescue centre in Gran Canaria.

A fresh batch of squid is on its way to a vets in Jersey, who are looking after an endangered turtle that was washed up on a local beach earlier this month.

Experts were cautious about being optimistic with Terri the Loggerhead sea turtle's chances after she was found dangerously cold, underweight and with bad infections. Vets said she had a 50% chance of survival.

Staff have been working hard with the help of a number of local organisations including Littlefeet Environmental, The Fresh Fish company, Ransoms, the Oyster company and gaining advice from the team at Durrell.

They've managed to source a holding tank as a temporary home for Terri, and have been slowing raising her temperature to the level it should normally be at, it's now up to 22 degrees.

New Era Vets have posted regular updates on their Facebook page, today they've said Terri is definitely more active, having a nibble at the wall and a batch of squid will be arriving tomorrow for her to eat.

The team are hoping to fly her over to a rescue centre in the Canary Islands, where the turtle will be in a more comfortable climate. They're hoping to set up a Go Fund Me web page to raise the cash for Terri's journey.
