Death of former Guernsey Bailiff

The death of former Bailiff of Guernsey, Sir Graham Dorey, has been announced this afternoon.

Sir Dorey carried out the role from 1992 to 1999.

As a mark of respect, the Guernsey flag will be flown at half-mast for the remainder of today and all of tomorrow on all States buildings that have a flag pole.

It is a tribute particularly poignant as the former Advocate campaigned for the island to have their own flag.

He had four children; Suzanne, Jane, Robert and Martyn and after the loss of his first wife, Penelope, he married Cicely Lummis.

“Sir Graham Dorey served the Island for 17 years as a full-time judge; 10 as Deputy Bailiff and 7 as Bailiff. As a judge he was always fair-minded and listened to counsel with great patience and tolerance. As Bailiff he took a keen interest in the arts as well as the sporting life of the Island, especially maritime activities – as was appropriate for someone whose first love was sailing.

"Behind the wheel of a racing yacht he shared the tough, fearless spirit that had shaped his reputation as an Advocate at the private bar before he was appointed to Crown office as H. M. Comptroller in 1973.

His strength of spirit was often masked by a warm and kindly manner which made him popular with islanders when he was Bailiff."
