Welcome home Sir George!

A statue of a Jerseyman who sided with the Royalists during the English Civil War has been unveiled in St Peter.

Sir George Carteret, who was appointed both Bailiff and Lt-Governor by King Charles 1, twice gave shelter and protection to his exiled son, later to become King Charles 2.

Carteret, an expert seaman who had learned his skills on the cod fishing fleet which criss-crossed the Atlantic between Jersey and the Gaspe Coast - formed a fleet of Privateers to plunder arms and munitions for the King's army.

Sir George's loyalty was rewarded at the restoration of the monarchy. He was made Treasurer of the Royal Navy and King Charles 2 renamed land in America New Jersey as a mark of respect to the help the island had given him.

That was 350 years ago and to mark the anniversary a bronze statue of Sir George has been unveiled in the centre of St Peter, the parish in which he lived and was schooled.

And to celebrate Jersey's greatest son, the pub the statue now stands in front of has been re-named the Sir George Carteret.
