States set to debate public sector cuts after protest march

Public sector workers marched through St Helier on Saturday

Jersey's government will debate its Medium Term Financial Plan tomorrow.

It comes after thousands of public sector workers marched through St Helier at the weekend, calling for plans to cut job and freeze pay to be scrapped.

The proposals are part of Ministers' aims to save £70 million.

We need to have a much more intelligent, wider, more inclusive debate on the future of funding for the public services. We cannot make the cuts that they want to make and have a meaningful public service left at the end.

Protesters turned out in St Helier today to march against the plans, outlined in the Medium Term Financial Plan.

Thousands to march in protest of public sector cuts

Nick Corbel, from the Unite union, says planned cuts will be damaging

Thousands of state workers will be marching through the streets of Jersey today, in protest of government plans to cut jobs and freeze pay.

As part of the Medium Term Financial Plan the Council of Ministers plans to save £70 million by cutting wages.

Additionally, there will be a freeze on public sector wages for the next few years, excluding nurses and midwives.

Around 2,000 people are expected to turn out on the streets of St Helier for the march.

We are all very concerned about the consequences of these cuts to Jersey's local economy. With rising unemployment, low wages and reduced spending power, local businesses will feel the impact.
