Local teachers in Guernsey have told ITV News they are 'tearful' and 'in disbelief' over news that the States could make a U-turn on a decision to change the school system.

The previous government voted to lose 11+ selection and move to a one school system.

But the current Education Committee have just announced they will put the idea to the States again, as early as November.

It comes after Deputy Paul Le Pelley, head of the Education Committee, admitted on Wednesday that his Committee can't agree on the best future for the system.

Politicians will now be asked to rescind or endorse already approved plans to:

  • Scrap the 11+ selection

  • Lose the Grammar School

  • Introduce a single school system over four existing school sites

Sarah Buck says she is in 'disbelief' after 'days of debate, reasoning and research' back in March.

Connie Armstrong said she was actually 'tearful' when she heard the Committee's news, adding she thought 'we had gotten somewhere, with people finally listening to the professionals'.
