BLOG: Autumn Equinox... but do we need the heating on?

It's that time of the year when many recognise that the seasons are changing... Its the Autumn Equinox.

How it happens...

The sun passes the equator - moving from the northern to southern hemisphere, and hence many regard this as the first day of the autumn season. The North pole is starting to tilt away from the sun and the day and night will become approximately the same length.

The term equinox actually comes from the Latin: "aequus" meaning "equal" and "nox" meaning "night"

What it means...

It means that the day and night will be 12 hours long, wheverever you are in the world.

What the weather will be like...

Well, we have had some blue sky but to the west is a weak front moving across bringing cloud for the afternoon and maybe some light rain or drizzle. That's set to clear overnight and it will be a pretty chilly night with lows of 10 degrees in Guernsey and 11 in Jersey - the lowest we have seen for a time. It might make many think about putting some heating on.

The weekend temperatures could reach 24 degrees on Saturday but it turns unsettled from Sunday, meaning more leaves will find their way to the ground and there'll be more visible signs of autumn.
