Asian Hornet identified in Alderney

A non-native Asian Hornet has been found and identified in Alderney.

The species poses a threat to honey bees and other pollinators as well as having a painful sting.

A nearby nest and larvae were destroyed as a precaution.

Islanders are being told to avoid direct contact with the creature and not to disturb their nest.

Bee keepers in Alderney and Guernsey have also been informed of the out-of-town visitor.

They've been warned to step up vigilance of their hives by using hornet traps.

The Asian Hornet is smaller than European Hornets.
