An Iranian man, who was found in the boot of a car in Jersey, has been granted asylum in the UK.

Amir Merrikhi was found by Custom and Immigration officials after arriving in the island on a ferry from France.

He was later charged with illegally entering Jersey and given a 10 week suspended jail sentence.

The Jersey to Calais Refugee Aid Group wrote on Facebook to say Mr Merrikhi had been granted asylum by Jersey authorities, and will be able to live in the UK with his brother and sister-in-law.
