Hundreds of cats killed on roads in winter

Animal welfare groups are urging pet owners to look after their cats as winter approaches.

Hundreds of cats are killed on the roads every year and experts say as daylight hours reduce, it is much more likely to happen.

He died when he was hit by a driver, who failed to stop, in the middle of the night.

The GSPCA and the JSPCAare now campaigning to make pet owners aware of the dangers.

Posters have been put up in St Helier, telling the stories of cats involved in incidents on Jersey's roads.

The GSPCA is urging islanders to take the necessary precautions to avoid cats getting injured or killed.

They offer the following advice:

  • Ensure your cat is neutered

  • Microchip your pets

  • Use a reflective safety collar

  • Keep them indoors during the darker periods of the night
