The M6 is set to be closed until 5pm this evening following the serious crash at 10.40am this morning.
Traffic was queuing back for several miles in both directions after the collision involving a lorry and a pick-up truck.
The crash happened on the northbound carriageway between junction 6 for the A38M Aston Expressway at Spaghetti Junction and Junction 7 at Great Barr.
The truck – a Fed Ex logistics vehicle – careered through the central reservation barrier and came to rest straddling both carriageways.
Emergency services closed the motorway in both directions and traffic tailed back to Junction 5 at Castle Bromwich and Junction 10 at Walsall.
One man was trapped in the cab of his vehicle and firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to free him from the wreckage.
It is not yet clear if anyone is seriously injured.
