A patient at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham has become the first person in the world to have a liver transplant using a pioneering new procedure which could change the future of organ transplantation. Surgeons used a machine to resuscitate a donated liver which would previously have been discarded.
Satpal Mahal, who is from Walsall, had cirrhosis of the liver. He is now the first person in the world to have a liver transplant using what has been dubbed as the warm blood machine.
