First ever 'Black Country Day' celebrated today
Credited as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, described as the nation's 'boiler room', events are taking place across the Black Country today in the region's first ever 'Black Country Day'.
It's Black Country Day! But what does it mean?
Today marks the first ever Black Country Day, celebrating Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell boroughs.
It marks the anniversary of the invention of the Newcomen Engine, the World’s first steam engine, built in Dudley in 1712.
Credited as the home of heavy metal music and the birthplace of the industrial revolution, today people across the region are celebrating its achievements for the first time.
The Black Country has a population of more than one million people.
Organisers of the Black Country Day say life would not be as we know it without the Black Country.
To celebrate the day a special flag has been designed and a song has been written.
