MPs: Euphemisms for 'complaint' should be banned

Euphemisms used to replace the word 'complaint' in the healthcare system should be banned as part of an overhaul in the wake of the Mid-Staffs scandal, a report by MPs claims today.

The report - entitled More Complaints Please - argues that a culture of denial and leadership failures in the healthcare system led to the Mid-Staffs scandal, and warns that lessons should be learned by the whole government.

The Public Administration Select Committee says that leaders' reluctance to listen to patients, their families or staff led to "unspeakable disaster" at the trust.

And it criticised the complaints process for being too complex and confusing, with words such as "appeal", "review" and "feedback" used instead of "complaint", concluding: "A complaint is a complaint. Nobody should be shy of the term 'complaint'. Other euphemistic terms should be banned."
