People in Groby in Leicestershire are being asked to stay indoors after a chemical leak caused a major blaze at a factory.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue say the smoke is 'no more toxic' than a house fire, and their advice to stay inside is a precaution.

The fire broke out at G E Druck on Fir Tree Lane shortly before 9:00am, after crews were called to a chemical spill at 6:30am.

Fire service statement on major chemical blaze

Speaking after a chemical reaction at a factory in Groby in Leicestershire caused a major fire this morning, Chief Fire and Rescue Officer Dave Webb said:

“Although this is a large, hazardous fire, crews from nine stations across Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service have prevented it becoming a major incident and working together now have the fire under control.

“Working in partnership with our colleagues from other emergency services the location is safe but as a precautionary measure would advise residents in the immediate vicinity to remain inside their homes with doors and windows closed until further notice.

Nitric acid leak lead to major Groby chemical blaze

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue has confirmed that nitric acid is involved in the major fire in Groby.

Crews were called to a business on Fir Tree Lane over two floors measuring 100x60 metres after reports of smoke shortly after 6:30am. Inside they found a spillage of around 5 litres of nitric acid.

Attempts were made to contain the spill, but the acid reacted and caught fire, and at 8:39am the fire service were withdrawn from the area due to further chemicals being involved, and the flames spreading rapidly.

Toxic fumes warning in Groby factory chemical fire

Police are advising residents in Groby in Leicestershire to keep their doors and windows closed for fear of toxic fumes from a major blaze at a factory in the town.

It's believed the chemical leak led to a reaction which caused the fire shortly before 8 o'clock this morning.

Police are warning residents in Groby in Leicestershire to keep their doors and windows closed after a chemical leak lead to a major fire this morning.

Twelve fire engines are tackling the flames at the plant on Fir Tree Lane. Officers from Leicestershire Police say the fire is under control. There are no reports of any injuries.

Chemical factory fire: Ambulance crews in attendance

Specialist ambulance crews are in attendance at a major blaze after a chemical leak at a factory in Leicestershire.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) says it's assisting the fire service at the incident at Fir Tree Lane in Groby.

Keith Sharpe, National Incident Liason Officer from the EMAS Hazardous Area Response Team, is on the scene. He said:

“We received a call at 7:51am today reporting a chemical leak in a factory on Fir Tree Lane in Groby.

“We have one Double Crewed Ambulance (DCA) on scene and specialist resources from HART who will remain on scene to support the Fire Service.

“We have taken a multi-agency approach to deal with the incident in the best way possible. There are no reported casualties and we are putting measures in place to ensure it stays that way.”
