Car flips and smashes into bus stop in 90mph police chase

A man and a woman were arrested after a 90mph police chase ended when their car - believed to be stolen - veered out of control and flipped, smashing headlong into a bus stop in Birmingham.

The white Fiat Grande Punto was spotted by officers near Heartlands Hospital just after 1.30am on Saturday - and when it refused to pull over, a high-speed chase through residential streets began.

The car weaved dangerously through the streets at speeds peaking at 92mph - but ended just three minutes later when the driver lost control, landing on its roof outside a parade of shops in Bordesley Green.

A 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were pulled out of the upside-down car by emergency services and taken to hospital with just minor injuries, and were both arrested on suspicion of car theft.

Officers are still looking for the owner of the car.

Investigating officer, Sgt Andy Edwards, said:

The car was being driven extremely dangerously and if anyone had been standing on that pavement at the time there could’ve been much graver consequences.

The driver clearly had no regard for public safety so it was crucial the traffic officers, who are highly trained to drive safely at speed, brought him to a stop as soon as possible.

The two people inside - a 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman - were arrested on suspicion of stealing the car after the crash, which happened at around 1.30am on Saturday.

They were today released on police bail while investigations continue.
