Fire crews tackle large blaze at scrap yard in Tipton

Fire crews are tackling a large blaze at a scrapyard in Tipton.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on George Henry Road just after 6:15am on Wednesday 11 October.

Posting to social media, West Midlands Fire Service asked people to avoid the area.

Local residents have also been advised to close windows and doors due to the high volumes of smoke.

Eight fire engines, one 4x4 brigade response vehicle, two hydraulic platforms and a high-volume water pumping unit were sent to the scene.

West Midlands Fire Service said the fire involved approximately 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

George Henry Road was also closed and diversions put in place, meaning a significant traffic build-up near KFC by Great Bridge Retail Park.

West Midlands Police is supporting the closures which they say will remain in place for some time.
