Leicester recycling plant fire: residents warned to stay indoors

Residents in the Belgrave area of Leicester are being urged to close all windows and stay indoors, or avoid the area completely, after a large fire at a recycling plant.

The blaze broke out on Wesley Street near to the junction of Beaumanor Road and Thurcaston Road Leicester.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue teams posted an update saying "Leicestershire Fire and rescue service are currently dealing with a large building fire on Wesley Street Leicester, fire involves a recycling centre measuring 100m by 40m. We currently have 14 resources tackling the blaze. Please avoid the area and keep widows and doors closed".

Crews are expected to remain at the scene overnight to try and dampen down the flames. Locals say the blaze could be seen from a distance.

A spokesperson from the Fire Service said: “This is a waste recycling centre. Large fire on the ground floor. We have 8 pumping appliances, 2 high reach aerial appliances, a hose layer on site. This incident is likely to be protracted and resources will be on scene for the night.Police and ambulance are also on site supporting.”
