Fire crews tackle "large scrapyard fire" in Nechells

West Midlands Fire Service is dealing with a "large scrapyard fire" on Aston Chruch Road in Nechells in Birmingham.

The fire started in a 200-tonne-heap of metal at the Hawkeswood Metal Recycling centre at around 8am Friday morning.

Station commander Lee Baker, wrote on Twitter "we currently have 8 appliances, 1x Aerial, 1 x High Volume Pump working at Shredmet Nechells.

"Crews will be in attendance most of the day working with on-site staff, creating a fire break".

The incident is believed to be at the site in which five men died at a recycling centre in 2016.

Emergency services are urging people to avoid the area while they try to bring the blaze under control.

A section of the A47 Heartlands Parkway is currently closed between Cuckoo Road and Saltley Viaduct.
