Passengers at Birmingham Airport are being urged to check for delays following the temporary closure of its runway.

The airport has announced that whilst the runway is now open, travelling passengers may face some disruption to their flight.

Earlier this afternoon, it has been confirmed that a plane flying from Reykjavik to Madrid was diverted in to Birmingham Airport due to a hydraulic issue.

The airport later tweeted that the D86241 landed safely with 152 crew and passengers on board. The airport's fire service were in attendance as a precautionary measure.

Passengers and crew on board the diverted plane had been taken to the terminal where they were being assisted by Birmingham Airport.

Following the incident, the airport closed the runway so that it could be cleared and inspected.

Passengers were told that flights would not be resuming before 5pm today and have been urged to check the airport's website for travel details and updates.

Birmingham Airport has apologised to all passengers affected by today’s closure, adding that the safety of all passengers is their priority.
