Road closures ahead of Alice Hawkins statue unveiling

There are several road closures and diversions in Leicester, while a dedicated to the suffragette Alice Hawkins is officially unveiled.

An estimated 200 people are expected to take park in a procession going from Humberside Gate East at 2pm.

The will be rolling road closures for short time only along parade route from 1:30pm.

The route is as follows:

  • Humberstone Gate East

  • Charles Street

  • Humberstone Gate West

  • East Gates

  • Cheapside

  • Market Place South

Alice Hawkins campaigned for women's suffrage.

Alice Hawkins was a shoe factory machinist who fought for women's right to vote in the early twentieth century.

She is be recognised with a seven-foot bronze statue at Leicester's new Market Square. It comes ahead of the centenary of women's suffrage.
