Teammates hold memorial walk for talented young rugby player who died in river

Friends of a 12-year-old boy who died after getting into difficulty in water have taken part in a memorial walk for him.

Owen Jenkins had been trying to rescue two girls who got into trouble water at Beeston Marina in Nottingham on Monday evening. His body was was found after a huge search operation.

Owen was a promising young rugby player, and had played for local team Nottingham Casuals since the age of seven.

His teammates walked from the rugby club to walk to the marina, carrying Owen's rugby shirt and a wreath.

A local church minister led prayers for Owen, which was followed by a minutes' silence in his memory.

The service was attended by his parents, Nicola and Gary, who carried roses.

Owen's coach, Bryn Lewis, said the memorial walk was also an opportunity for Owen's teammates to come together and support each other.

They have been offered counselling from a club member with experience in grief.

Mr Lewis described Owen "an exceptional rugby player" who "always played with a smile on his face".

The Nottingham Casuals are also planning a long-term memorial in Owen's honour.
