Snake found abandoned in plastic box

A snake was found abandoned in a plastic box on in a Nottingham street by as shocked passer-by.
The boa constrictor was discovered on Little John Walk in the St Ann's area of the city on 1 March.
An animal welfare inspector reported smelling a strong odour coming from the snake who was lethargic and in bad shape by the time it was seen by vets.
RSPCA inspector Laura Kirkham said: “The snake had shed a skin inside the box and there was a dead gerbil in water. There was also a sludge of brown water in there - it was terrible conditions for this poor snake, which was very cold.”
Unfortunately there was little that could be done for the reptile, who was put to sleep after he was found to be suffering from a respiratory condition and an abscess of the head.
The RSPCA say incidents like this highlight how important it is for pet owners to understand the needs of exotic pets.
