A hunt is underway after a woman was repeatedly punched in the face in an unprovoked attack as she sat at Birmingham New Street station tram stop.

The victim, thought to be in her 30s, was waiting for her Midland Metro tram at 7.30pm on Tuesday, January 10th, when a man came and sat next to her.

CCTV footage then shows a man jumping up and punching the woman to the left of her jaw and then in the side of her face.

He then walked off towards Corporation Street, leaving the woman in pain, with reddened skin and extremely distressed by the ordeal.

British Transport Police are appealing to witnesses and anyone who has information about the man to contact them urgently.

Investigating officer PC Jon Riddell said: “This was a totally unprovoked attack which has left the woman feeling extremely distressed. She was in extreme pain and her skin had completely reddened.

“I would like to speak to the man seen in the CCTV footage. I am also keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or has any information about the man.

“Nobody should have to experience this kind of violence or behaviour."
