Ten ways to cool down and get to sleep in the heatwave
Have you been struggling to sleep in the very warm evenings? During the heatwave weather read up on our top tips to help you sleep.
Open windows
Letting in cool evening air can make a huge difference. But isn't always a relief if you are next to a noisy road!
Don't wear too many layers
You might want to ditch the pyjamas on a warm evening. Make sure you're comfortable.
Correct duvet
Are you using the right duvet? In the warmer weather you need to be using a lighter summer duvet with a low tog rating. So pack your winter duvet away.
Stay hydrated
You should do your best to keep as hydrated as possible. Try keeping a glass of cold water next to your bed.
Air-conditioning
If you're fortunate enough to have air-conditioning put it on. If not, try using a fan.
Keep curtains closed
During the day. It should mean the room is much cooler in the evening.
Don't take a cold shower
It may seem like it would work but it actually won't. Having a cold shower means your body overcompensates, attempting to warm you up afterwards. Try a lukewarm shower instead.
Flannels
For people who become very overheated and unable to nod off, items soaked in cold water can be used to help you sleep. Soak a flannel in cold water, wring it out and then lay it on exposed flesh.
Run your wrists under the cold tap
Put both your wrists into a bowl of very cold water and hold them there until your body cools down, or hold them under the cold tap for a few seconds.
Change where you sleep
If it all gets too much, you might want to temporarily sleep downstairs on a folding bed preferably on a cool, tiled floor.
